Most Wanted Hatch Build… Part 1
In our pervious post I gave you guys some background info on Jamaal and some insight into the plans for his build; however, it wasn’t long before Jamaal’s mind shifted and decided to take things a step further. Jamaal decided to explore the extent in which he could go with an all motor setup while remaining streetable. We’ll dive into the specifics of the motor setup along with some progress that has been made with the shell as various swap related parts arrived.
For those who may be viewing this build for the first time, I’ve provided the link to the previous post below:-
Most Wanted Hatch Build… Introduction
Things were coming along quite well where the shell was concerned as it was in its final stages of paint…
Upon completion, the shell was loaded up to make its way home…
Even though the shell returned home, it still required a vast amount of work to be done…
It wasn’t mentioned prior but when Jamaal purchased the shell the windshield had already been cracked from the accident…
He was able to source a new one and replaced the moulding while it was at it…
While the shell was going through the paint phase Jamaal received a number of deliveries…
Jamaal went with a set of Avid1 AV-19 wheels in a 16×8 configuration with a machined finish…
And had them wrapped in 195/45 series Momo rubber…
To ensure the Civic had no issues where braking was concerned and wanting to be able to fit 15″ wheels on the car, Jamaal purchased some Wilwood Dynalite 4 pot calipers for the front…
For suspension Jamaal chose a set of TruHart Street Plus coilovers…
After making some adjustments to the motor plans Jamal decided to purchase a swap header with a megaphone…
However, the 2.5″ exhaust system had already been purchased…
Given the rapid rate in which Jamaal can change his mind, the OEM shifter was replaced for a billet aluminum K-Tuned piece complete with race spec cables and K-Tuned shift knob to match…
Meanwhile the tailgate, mirrors, Seeker version II wing, front bumper and lip were delivered to be fitted in place…
The shell was completely gutted and needed to be reassembled, with all the parts laid out it was time to start fitting the piecing together…
A look at the disassembled front end with the new headlights temporarily fitted…
Jamaal was able to fit the tailgate and Seeker wing…
Along with the front bumper before closing out the day…
With a new day came a new challenge, Jamaal wanted to be ensure the car had adequate stopping power and sourced some rear trailing arms and calipers…
As you can see they have seen better days…
Jamaal went ahead and removed the rear drum brake setup and fitted the rear disc conversion arms with upgraded Energy Suspension trailing arm bushings…
Not being so fond of the dated gray carpet, Jamaal opted to replace it with a signature red Civic Type R carpet…
Jamaal wanted ideal fitment on the wheel and opted to pick up a front and rear camber kit along with some 99-00 spec rear taillights…
First up were fitting the lights…
The rear of the car as it started to come together…
Jamaal then went to work and installed in the Tru Hart coilovers along with Skunk2 LCAs, ASR subframe brace and to finish it up, Beaks lower tie bar…
Avid1 wheels fitted…
Shell back on the ground, all in a good days work…
The shell was then loaded up to undergo the next stage of assembly…
Spy shot taken en route to the next destination…
Now for the real reveal of this post, the motor setup. Well fortunately or unfortunately things have taken a turn from the initial plan of using a stock motor. Jamaal decided as he was going to do a swap he would like it to be competitive and decided he would start with a K24 block…
He then had the block punched out to 89mm and purchased a set of 13.7 compression CP pistons and Manley H beam rods…
A shot of the CP pistons matched to the block after its return from the machine shop…
Given the bottom end specs, Jamaal wanted to ensure the car was able to breathe and went with a Skunk2 Ultra Street intake manifold with a Skunk2 70mm throttle body. While he was at Jamaal purchased a K-Tuned fuel rail as well…
Sticking closely to the USDM style of building Hondas, a tucked engine bay was one of the things on his agenda…
The goal wouldn’t be achieved without first tucking the brake lines, so Jamaal reached out to Finishing Lines and purchased one of their kits…
Looking mean with no headlights as the shell arrived to have the motor fitted…
A look at the completed brake lines…
The long block was assembled and lifted into the bay along with a type S gearbox…
The head package included Ferrea valves, Supertech valve springs and retainers along with some Blueprint Racing camshafts…
Having a goal to drive the car on the street a K-Tuned power steering pump relocation kit was purchased…
In addition to the relocation kit, Jamaal picked up a K-Tuned adjustable idler pulley and belt…
On the fuel end, a K-Tuned fuel pressure regulator was added to the list of goodies…
Not quite finished with the engine bay a Type R valve cover was acquired…
And fitted…
Skunk2 / K-Tuned combination is a winner…
Skunk2 intake manifold, throttle body and K-Tuned fuel rail fitted in place; a few more K-Tuned goodies that Jamaal picked up were the dipstick and an oil cap…
Megaphone header bolted up…
Engine bay coming together nicely with a few more pieces in place, K-Tuned coil plug cover, idler pulley and upper coolant housing…
A step further, K Tuned race spec shifter cables and billet shifter cable grommet installed along with the Blox Racing S2000 clutch master cylinder and clutch line…
To ensure maximum cooling Jamaal decided to go with a full sized radiator and went back to the K-Tuned catalog for the radiator hoses…
Paying closer attention you will notice that the fuel lines have all been ran, Jamaal went with a Walbro 450 in tank pump with -6 AN fuel lines and inline fuel filter. A set of 1000cc Injector Dynamics injectors closed out the fuel system…
A close up of the headlight where you also get a better idea of the fitment on the Avid1 wheels…
The car as a it sat with the motor in place awaiting a few steps until completion…
As the car wasn’t yet street legal, it was loaded up and returned at home…
Jamaal then received another delivery…
Gear-X close ratio 1-4 gear set…
With a few things needed to be done Jamaal went to work…
The interior required a bit more attention, Jamaal was in the process of fitting up a few panels and installing some necessary gauges…
3 point strut brace fitted to the bay…
Elevated…
Wrenching in progress…
Gearbox swapped out for the rebuilt box with Gear-X internals…
The bay wasn’t buttoned up without the addition of a K-Tuned radiator cap…
A few shots of the bay exposing the Skunk2 intake…
With the wheel removed you get a view of the Wilwood 4 pot caliper with slotted and drilled rotor combination…
Some close ups on the Seeker version II wing…
With much of everything out of the way it was time to add some fuel and prepare to have this thing tuned…
And on that note we’ll close out this update; thanks for viewing and be on the lookout for more to come…
